Yves Klein
A striking monochrome study by Yves Klein, focusing on the raw, emotive power of pure red pigment.
Yves Klein, a central figure in post-war European art, is widely recognised for his exploration of pure colour and the immaterial. While he is most frequently associated with his signature International Klein Blue, his practice also involved the use of other pigments to investigate the sensory experience of colour. This work presents a field of saturated red, applied with a gestural quality that departs from his more uniform, roller-applied surfaces. The composition rejects traditional representational forms, focusing instead on the physical presence of the pigment itself. By isolating the colour, Klein invites the viewer to engage with the material directly, free from the distractions of narrative or figurative content. The irregular edges of the red field against the stark white ground introduce a sense of movement and spontaneity, contrasting with the meditative stillness often found in his larger monochrome panels. Klein viewed his monochrome works as open windows to a realm of pure sensibility. He sought to liberate colour from the constraints of line and form, allowing it to exist as an autonomous entity. This approach was a reaction against the prevailing trends of gestural abstraction, offering a more disciplined and conceptual alternative. The work serves as a record of his ongoing inquiry into the nature of space and the perception of light. Through this reductionist approach, Klein aimed to reach a state of total immersion, where the viewer becomes part of the colour field. This print captures the raw energy of his pigment-based experiments, maintaining the tactile quality of the original application. It is a study in the power of a single hue to command space and evoke a direct emotional response, stripped of external references.
