This abstract painting by Mark Rothko features soft-edged rectangles of yellow, white, and orange. The colours blend, creating depth and luminosity, inviting emotional engagement.
Mark Rothko, born Markus Yakovlevich Rothkowitz in Latvia, was a leading figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement. He emigrated to the United States as a child and later became known for his large-scale colour field paintings. These works, characterised by their hazy, rectangular forms, aim to evoke emotional and spiritual responses in the viewer. Rothko's art moved away from traditional representation, seeking instead to express fundamental human emotions through colour and form. His mature style emerged in the late 1940s, and he continued to refine it until his death in 1970. Rothko's works are held in major museum collections worldwide. Untitled (No. 11) exemplifies Rothko's signature style. The painting features stacked, soft-edged rectangles of colour. A large yellow block sits atop a thin white band, which in turn rests above a larger orange field. The colours bleed into one another, creating a sense of depth and luminosity. The absence of defined shapes or figures encourages viewers to engage with the work on a purely emotional level, contemplating the interplay of colour and light.

Dropped out of Yale, spent a decade finding his format, returned a restaurant commission because the diners did not deserve the paintings, and filled a chapel after his death.
