A fine wood engraving by Timothy Cole, capturing a serene pastoral scene with cattle and figures in the style of Dutch Golden Age painting.
Timothy Cole was a master of the wood engraving technique, a medium he refined to an exceptional degree during the late nineteenth century. This print demonstrates his ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil painting into the precise, linear language of the woodblock. The scene depicts a quiet pastoral moment, featuring a herdsman seated with two children near a small group of cattle. The composition draws inspiration from the Dutch Golden Age tradition, echoing the atmospheric depth and rural subjects favoured by painters such as Aelbert Cuyp.
Cole utilised a complex system of cross-hatching and varying line weights to achieve the soft transitions of light across the sky and the textured surfaces of the foliage. The foreground is rendered with careful attention to the density of the grass and the forms of the resting animals, while the background recedes into a hazy, light-filled horizon. This work reflects the technical rigour of the period, where engravers sought to capture the nuances of light and shadow without relying on the mechanical processes that were beginning to dominate commercial printing.
As a practitioner of the 'new school' of American wood engraving, Cole moved away from the rigid, schematic lines of earlier commercial work. Instead, he focused on painterly effects, using the burin to create subtle gradients that suggest the warmth of the sun and the coolness of the shade. The result is a print that possesses a tactile quality, inviting the viewer to examine the fine details of the herdsman's clothing and the varied hides of the cattle. This piece serves as an example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by Cole during his tenure as a primary engraver for major periodicals of the era, where he reproduced works by Old Masters for a wider audience.
