A dynamic late-period abstract work by Sam Francis, featuring a rhythmic interplay of saturated colour, splatters, and open white space.
Sam Francis, a prominent figure in the post-war American art scene, produced this work in the final year of his life. The composition displays the characteristic energy and spatial awareness that defined his later career. Francis often utilised the white space of the canvas as an active element, allowing his marks to float or cluster in ways that suggest an expansive, non-hierarchical structure.
In this piece, the application of paint involves a combination of controlled drips, splatters, and broader washes. The interaction between the opaque, saturated pigments and the thinner, more translucent layers creates a sense of depth despite the lack of traditional perspective. The palette is marked by high-contrast hues, including turquoise, yellow, and violet, which are distributed across the surface with a rhythmic intensity.
Francis spent significant time in Paris and Japan, and his work reflects a synthesis of Western gestural painting and Eastern concepts of void and space. Unlike the dense, all-over compositions of some of his contemporaries, this work maintains a sense of openness. The marks appear to radiate from the centre towards the edges, creating a dynamic tension between the painted forms and the unpainted ground. This approach to the canvas allows the viewer to observe the physical process of the paint application, from the initial splash to the final, delicate trail of pigment. The work is a clear example of his late-period style, where the focus shifted towards a more liberated, light-filled abstraction that prioritised the physical properties of colour and the movement of the hand.
