Villon, born Gaston Émile Duchamp, was a French Cubist and abstract painter, also known as a printmaker. He was the brother of artists Marcel Duchamp and Suzanne Duchamp-Crotti. The composition features a skeleton, its bony structure delineated with fine, precise lines, seated atop a horse whose form is similarly abstracted. The background is a wash of turquoise, against which the figures stand out. A large eye floats in the background, adding a layer of surrealism to the piece.
