A monochromatic Coptic textile fragment featuring vertical bands, dating from the 4th to 6th century.
This textile fragment originates from the Coptic period in Egypt, a time when weaving techniques reached a high level of technical proficiency. The piece displays a dark, monochromatic ground, likely composed of wool, which has survived the centuries despite the degradation of the organic fibres. Two vertical bands run parallel along the right side, providing a structural contrast to the otherwise plain field. These bands suggest the fragment was once part of a larger garment, such as a tunic, where such decorative elements served to define the silhouette and indicate the status of the wearer.
The survival of such fragments provides a window into the daily life and material culture of late antique Egypt. The weave structure is visible, showing the tension between the warp and weft threads. Over time, the fabric has developed creases and areas of loss, which now contribute to the visual texture of the piece. The monochromatic nature of the fragment shifts the focus toward the physical reality of the object, its age, and the history embedded within its fibres. It is a study in minimalism, where the simplicity of the design allows the viewer to observe the craftsmanship of ancient weavers.
This print captures the raw, archaeological quality of the original textile. It is suitable for those who appreciate the aesthetic of historical artefacts and the quiet beauty of aged materials. The composition is balanced by the vertical lines, which break the uniformity of the dark surface. As a museum-grade reproduction, this print maintains the tonal range of the original, ensuring that the subtle variations in the weave remain visible. It offers a direct connection to the past, presented without artifice or modern interpretation.
