A detailed photographic record of a Coptic textile fragment featuring a repeating wave motif, dating from late antiquity.
This image documents a textile fragment originating from the Coptic period in Egypt. The piece displays a woven band featuring a repeating wave motif, a common decorative element in late antique textiles. The structure relies on the contrast between the dark, heavy woollen threads and the lighter linen ground, which provides a clear visual rhythm across the surface of the fabric.
Textiles from this era often served as decorative borders or medallions on garments such as tunics. The survival of such fragments is rare, as the organic fibres are susceptible to decay over time. This specific example, held within the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, retains the physical evidence of its age, including frayed edges and the original museum accession tags. The weaving technique demonstrates a high level of technical proficiency, utilising a supplementary weft to create the raised, undulating pattern that defines the central band.
As a historical object, the fragment offers insight into the material culture of late antiquity. It reflects the aesthetic preferences of the period, where geometric and stylised organic forms were frequently employed to ornament everyday clothing. The monochromatic nature of the surviving wool emphasises the structural composition of the weave rather than colour. This print captures the texture of the original fibres, allowing for an examination of the craftsmanship involved in ancient textile production. It is a record of a functional object that has transitioned into an archaeological specimen, preserved for its historical and technical value.
