A collection of historical textile fragments featuring diverse embroidery patterns, from bold floral motifs to delicate geometric borders.
This collection of textile fragments, catalogued as towel ends, provides a view into the domestic needlework traditions of the past. The assembly features a variety of decorative techniques applied to linen, ranging from bold, stylised floral motifs to delicate, repeating geometric borders. The largest piece on the left displays a prominent, symmetrical botanical pattern, characterised by sharp, serrated leaves and a central blossom. This design relies on high-contrast visual weight, suggesting a technique such as darning or counted-thread embroidery.
To the right, several narrower strips demonstrate different approaches to ornamentation. One band features a repeating sequence of stylised tulips and small buds, arranged within a rigid, linear framework. Below this, a more fluid, scrolling vine pattern incorporates softer, organic curves, contrasting with the geometric precision of the other samples. The bottom two strips exhibit horizontal, repeating motifs that function as decorative hems. These include snowflake-like geometric shapes and a continuous, scalloped floral border.
Such fragments were often preserved as samples of skill or as remnants of household linens that had otherwise worn away. The variety of patterns suggests a regional or cultural preference for specific motifs, likely passed down through generations of needleworkers. The monochrome nature of the surviving embroidery, while perhaps influenced by the limitations of the original thread colours, allows the viewer to focus entirely on the composition and the rhythm of the repeated elements. These pieces offer a glimpse into the functional art of the home, where everyday objects were elevated through careful, manual labour. The preservation of these specific sections indicates their value as records of design, capturing the aesthetic priorities of the period in which they were produced.
