A refined surimono woodblock print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai, depicting a domestic scene with women and a child, accompanied by traditional Japanese calligraphy.
This surimono print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai depicts an interior scene featuring two women and a child engaged with a small spinning device. Shinsai, a pupil of Katsushika Hokusai, was known for his contributions to the surimono genre, which consisted of privately commissioned prints often distributed among poetry circles. These works frequently combined refined woodblock techniques with kyōka, or comic verse, which is visible here in the elegant calligraphy to the left of the figures.
The composition focuses on the domestic activity of the subjects. One woman operates the spinning tool while the other observes, accompanied by a child. The artist employs a muted colour palette, characteristic of the surimono style, which favoured subtle tones over the bolder colours found in commercial ukiyo-e prints. The attention to detail in the textile patterns of the kimonos and the inclusion of a standing lantern and a folding screen provide a sense of the quiet, refined atmosphere typical of the Edo period.
Shinsai was particularly adept at capturing the delicate interactions between figures within a confined space. The lines are precise and controlled, reflecting the high standards expected by the patrons who commissioned these prints. The inclusion of the poem suggests that the print functioned as a visual accompaniment to a literary gathering, where the imagery and text were meant to be appreciated in tandem. This piece offers a glimpse into the cultural life of the period, where art, poetry, and craftsmanship intersected in the private sphere.
