Description
A hand-coloured albumen print by Kusakabe Kimbei depicting a path lined with stone lanterns in Ueno Park, Tokyo, during the late nineteenth century.
This hand-coloured albumen print by Kusakabe Kimbei captures a path within Ueno Park, Tokyo, during the late nineteenth century. The composition features a symmetrical arrangement of stone lanterns, known as tōrō, lining a walkway that leads towards a traditional torii gate. The perspective draws the eye towards the centre of the frame, where the path disappears into the dense foliage of the park.
Kusakabe Kimbei was a prominent figure in the Yokohama school of photography. He initially worked as an assistant to Felice Beato and Baron Raimund von Stillfried before establishing his own studio in 1881. His work catered to both domestic clients and the growing number of international travellers visiting Japan during the Meiji period. These photographs were often sold as souvenirs, providing a visual record of Japanese sites and customs for a global audience.
The process of hand-colouring, applied here with subtle washes, was a signature technique of the period. It allowed photographers to add a layer of realism and warmth to the monochrome albumen base. The muted palette of greens, greys, and earthy tones reflects the natural environment of the park while maintaining the atmospheric quality of the original negative. The octagonal framing of the image is characteristic of the presentation style used in period albums, which were popular among collectors of the time.
This image provides a historical view of Ueno Park, a site that underwent significant transformation during the Meiji era as it transitioned from temple grounds to a public space. The presence of the stone lanterns and the torii gate serves as a reminder of the area's religious history. The print remains a valuable document of Japanese urban development and the aesthetic sensibilities of late nineteenth-century photography.
