A portrait by Wallerant Vaillant, 'Vaandeldrager (Standard Bearer)' depicts a young standard bearer in a dark doublet and feathered hat, rendered in the soft mezzotint technique.
Wallerant Vaillant (1623-1677) was a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker. He is known for his portraits and genre scenes, and he was one of the first artists to develop the mezzotint technique. Vaillant was born in Lille, but his family moved to Amsterdam when he was young. He trained as a painter and printmaker, and he quickly gained a reputation for his skill. He worked for several prominent patrons, including the Stadtholder Frederick Henry. Vaillant died in Amsterdam in 1677. His work is represented in many major museums, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Louvre in Paris. This portrait depicts a young man holding a standard, or flag. He wears a dark doublet with a white ruff and a wide-brimmed hat with a feather. The young man's gaze is directed to the right, away from the viewer. The background is dark and indistinct, which helps to focus attention on the figure. The print is executed in mezzotint, a technique that Vaillant helped to pioneer. This process creates a soft, velvety effect, which is particularly well-suited to portraiture.
