A detailed 18th-century etching by Gabriel Huquier, after a design by Edmé Bouchardon, featuring a classical vase with a ram's head motif.
This etching by Gabriel Huquier depicts a classical vase design, based on an original drawing by the sculptor Edmé Bouchardon. The work reflects the French Rococo interest in antiquity and the ornamental arts. Huquier, a prominent printmaker and art dealer in Paris, produced this series to disseminate designs for decorative objects, which were often used by craftsmen and architects of the period.
The vase features a distinct fluted neck and a lower body decorated with a basket-weave texture. A ram's head serves as the central decorative element, positioned where the handles meet the body. The handles themselves are shaped with a rhythmic, organic curve, typical of the period's aesthetic. The background is rendered with dense cross-hatching, which creates a dark, atmospheric contrast that pushes the form of the vase forward. The inscription at the bottom, 'Bouchardon In.' and 'Huquier Sculp.', confirms the collaboration between the designer and the printmaker, while the phrase 'avec Privilege du Roy' indicates the official royal authorisation for the publication of the print.
This piece demonstrates the technical precision of 18th-century printmaking. The lines are controlled and deliberate, defining the volume of the vessel through light and shadow. The composition is balanced and symmetrical, presenting the object as a formal study. Such prints were essential for the circulation of design ideas across Europe, allowing the influence of Parisian workshops to reach a wider audience. The focus here is on the sculptural quality of the object, capturing the texture of the metal or stone from which such a vase would have been crafted. It remains a clear example of the intersection between fine art printmaking and the practical requirements of the decorative arts industry in the mid-18th century.
