A minimalist ink drawing by Dutch artist Lucebert, featuring two abstract figures in a state of descent, executed with spontaneous, expressive brushwork.
Lucebert, born Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk, was a central figure in the Dutch post-war avant-garde. As a poet and painter, his work often blurred the lines between linguistic expression and visual art. This piece, titled Vallende figuren, dates from 1970 and reflects the artist's characteristic approach to form and line. The composition features two distorted, humanoid shapes captured in a state of collapse or descent.
Lucebert utilised a spontaneous, calligraphic ink technique, prioritising raw gesture over anatomical precision. The figures are rendered with minimal detail, yet they convey a sense of kinetic energy through their twisted limbs and exaggerated features. The stark contrast of black ink against the white paper creates a sense of isolation, forcing the viewer to focus on the movement of the lines themselves.
This work aligns with the aesthetic principles of the CoBrA movement, which favoured childlike spontaneity, experimentation, and a rejection of traditional academic constraints. By stripping away unnecessary ornamentation, Lucebert allows the viewer to engage directly with the emotional weight of the subject. The figures appear to be in a state of flux, their forms dissolving into abstract marks that suggest both vulnerability and absurdity. This print captures the immediacy of the original ink drawing, preserving the texture of the brushwork and the fluidity of the artist's hand. It is a study in economy of line, demonstrating how a few decisive strokes can define a complex psychological state.
