A powerful 1930 oil painting by Emily Carr, depicting the weathered remains of an Indigenous village site being reclaimed by the coastal forest.
Vanquished, painted in 1930, represents a period of intense creative output for Emily Carr. During this time, she travelled extensively through the coastal regions of British Columbia, documenting the remnants of Indigenous totem poles and village sites. This work depicts a scene of decay, where the wooden structures of a former settlement are slowly reclaimed by the surrounding forest. The composition is dominated by a heavy, turbulent sky that presses down upon the earth, creating a sense of atmospheric weight.
Carr employs a rhythmic, swirling brushwork that unifies the sky and the ground. The totem poles, now weathered and leaning, appear as skeletal figures amidst the encroaching greenery. Her palette relies on deep forest greens, earthy browns, and moody, bruised purples, which evoke the damp, shadowed environment of the Pacific Northwest. The foreground features fallen logs and debris, reinforcing the theme of transition and the passage of time.
Unlike her earlier, more descriptive watercolours, this oil painting demonstrates a shift towards a more subjective, emotional interpretation of the environment. The forms are simplified and abstracted, prioritising the energy of the natural world over precise topographical accuracy. The painting captures the tension between human history and the relentless growth of the wilderness. It is a sombre observation of a site that has been abandoned, yet remains charged with the presence of its past. Carr manages to convey the physical reality of the site while imbuing the scene with a sense of melancholy. The work remains a primary example of her ability to synthesise the rugged geography of Canada with a personal, modernist visual language.
