A pen and ink drawing by Jan van Huysum shows Hercules and Cerberus in a circular medallion format. The artwork is rendered with delicate lines and subtle shading, typical of van Huysum's draughtsmanship.
This drawing by Jan van Huysum (1682-1749) depicts Hercules and Cerberus. Executed in pen and brown ink with grey wash on paper, the artwork presents a classical subject rendered with delicate lines and subtle shading. The composition is contained within a circular format, resembling a medallion design. Hercules, the mythological hero, is shown standing over Cerberus, the multi-headed dog guarding the entrance to the Underworld. Hercules is depicted holding a club, poised to strike. The figures are rendered with careful attention to anatomy and form, typical of van Huysum's draughtsmanship. The limited palette of brown ink and grey wash creates a sense of depth and volume, while also lending the drawing a timeless quality. Van Huysum was a Dutch painter and draughtsman, known for his flower paintings and classical subjects. This drawing shows his skill in figure drawing and his engagement with classical mythology. The drawing may have been a preparatory study for a larger painting or a decorative work. The inscription '1906-19a' at the bottom suggests it was once part of a collection or catalogue.
