A study in colour theory and texture, this 1887 still life captures a floral arrangement through the artist's signature expressive brushwork.
Painted during his time in Paris, this work demonstrates the artist's exploration of colour theory and brushwork. The composition features a central blue vase containing a dense arrangement of yellow daisies, lilac blossoms, and dark anemones. The background consists of a textured, blue-toned surface that contrasts with the warm yellow petals of the daisies.
Van Gogh employed a technique of thick paint application, known as impasto, which provides a physical dimension to the surface of the canvas. The brushstrokes are directional and rhythmic, guiding the eye across the floral arrangement. His use of complementary colours, specifically the juxtaposition of blue and yellow, creates a visual tension that animates the subject matter. Unlike his later works from Arles, this painting reflects the influence of the Parisian art scene, where he engaged with the ideas of the Impressionists and Neo-Impressionists regarding light and colour.
The vase itself is rendered in a simplified, monochromatic blue, which serves as a stable base for the chaotic energy of the flowers above. The surface upon which the vase rests is treated with a dotted, pointillist-inspired texture, suggesting a table top. This piece offers a clear view into the artist's technical development as he moved away from the darker palettes of his early Dutch period toward the brighter, more expressive style that defined his later career. The work remains a study in the balance between observation and personal interpretation, capturing the fleeting nature of the bouquet through a deliberate and structured application of oil paint.
