Maurice Prendergast (1858-1924) was an American Post-Impressionist artist who favoured lively, plein-air scenes of urban life and leisure. He is known for his colourful and somewhat abstracted depictions of people in parks, beaches, and city streets. Prendergast's work often features a flattened perspective and a mosaic-like application of paint, drawing influence from artists such as Édouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard. He was among the first American artists to appreciate and adopt the avant-garde styles of Europe. This watercolour painting captures a bustling street in Venice.
