Vasily Polenov (1844-1919) was a Russian painter associated with the передвижники (Peredvizhniki, or "The Wanderers"), a realist movement that sought to depict Russian life and society. Although primarily known for historical and religious scenes, Polenov also produced a number of landscapes and cityscapes during his travels in Europe and the Middle East. His work often displays an interest in capturing light and atmosphere, aligning him with some Impressionist techniques. 'Venice' presents a view of the city's canals and architecture. The composition focuses on the buildings lining the waterway, rendered in soft, muted tones. The water reflects the structures, creating a sense of depth and movement. Several boats are moored along the canal, adding to the scene's sense of everyday life.
