A refined 1785 copperplate engraving by Quirin Mark depicting the classical figures of Venus and Cupid in repose.
This copperplate engraving by Quirin Mark, dated 1785, depicts the classical subject of Venus and Cupid in a state of repose. The composition draws upon the aesthetic conventions of the late eighteenth century, prioritising smooth transitions of tone and a balanced arrangement of figures. Venus is shown reclining, her form rendered with soft, rounded contours that contrast with the darker, more dramatic folds of the drapery behind her. Cupid rests against her, his smaller frame providing a sense of scale and intimacy to the scene.
Mark, an Austrian engraver active in Vienna, demonstrates technical precision in his handling of the burin. The engraving captures the textures of the fabric and the softness of the skin through varied hatching and cross-hatching techniques. The inclusion of the bow and arrow, resting near the figures, serves as a traditional iconographic marker for the deities. The lower portion of the print features an elaborate dedication and coat of arms, typical of the period's print culture, which often functioned as both decorative art and a display of patronage. This work reflects the broader European interest in classical mythology that defined the Neoclassical period, presenting an idealised vision of divine rest. The print is a fine example of the reproductive engraving tradition, where the engraver translates the qualities of a painted original into the monochromatic medium of the printed page. The clarity of the lines and the controlled use of shadow create a sense of volume, allowing the figures to emerge from the background with a quiet, measured presence.
