A refined Rococo drawing depicting the mythological encounter between Venus and Vulcan, rendered in pen, ink, and wash.
This drawing by Louis Félix de La Rue depicts a classical mythological scene, specifically the encounter between Venus and Vulcan. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the ethereal realm of the goddess and the terrestrial, industrious space of the forge. Venus appears suspended in the upper left, surrounded by a group of putti, her form rendered with fluid, light strokes that suggest movement and grace. Below her, the scene shifts to the workshop of Vulcan, where the god of fire sits amidst his assistants. The figures here are more grounded, their musculature defined by firmer lines and subtle washes that create a sense of volume and weight.
La Rue, a French sculptor and draughtsman, demonstrates his command of the Rococo style through the balanced, decorative arrangement of the figures and the light, airy quality of the ink work. The use of brown wash provides depth to the scene, allowing the figures to emerge from the paper surface without the need for heavy shading. The interaction between the divine and the mortal is handled with a sense of narrative clarity, common in the academic training of the period. The presence of the putti, engaged in various tasks around the forge, adds a playful element to the otherwise serious mythological subject. This work reflects the artist's interest in classical themes, a common pursuit for French artists of the eighteenth century who sought to reinterpret antiquity through a refined, decorative lens. The drawing serves as an example of the preparatory techniques employed by artists of the era, where ink and wash were used to establish both the composition and the tonal values before final execution in other media.
