A 1654 etching by Herman van Swanevelt depicting the mythological scene of Venus mourning Adonis within a detailed, atmospheric woodland setting.
This etching by Herman van Swanevelt, dated 1654, depicts a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The composition centres on the goddess Venus, who mourns the loss of her lover, Adonis. She is shown in a state of grief, accompanied by a small putto, while the lifeless body of Adonis lies nearby, guarded by his hunting dogs. The narrative is set within a characteristic Swanevelt environment, where the figures are secondary to the expansive, atmospheric surroundings.
Swanevelt, often referred to as 'Herman d'Italie' due to his long residence in Rome, was a master of the classical style. His approach to printmaking involved a careful balance between the foreground details and the receding vistas of mountains and trees. The etching technique allows for a fine graduation of tone, particularly in the rendering of the clouds and the textured bark of the large, dominant tree on the left. The inclusion of a fallen log in the immediate foreground provides a sense of physical depth, drawing the eye across the river towards the distant, hazy hills.
The work includes an inscription in French at the bottom, which reflects upon the transience of life and memory, a common theme in seventeenth-century art. The precision of the line work, combined with the dramatic use of light and shadow, demonstrates the technical skill Swanevelt acquired during his time in Italy, where he was influenced by the works of Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin. This print is a fine example of the Dutch Italianate style, which sought to combine the rigorous observation of nature with the idealised forms of classical mythology. It remains a clear representation of the period's fascination with the intersection of human emotion and the natural world.
