A detailed etching by Guglielmo Morghen after Correggio, depicting the mythological scene of Venus disarming Cupid in the presence of a satyr.
This fine etching and engraving by Guglielmo Morghen reproduces the composition originally painted by Correggio. The work depicts the goddess Venus in the act of disarming her son, Cupid, by removing his bow. To the right, a satyr observes the scene with a grin, adding a layer of classical narrative tension. The print demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of Morghen, who was a skilled interpreter of Renaissance masters during the late eighteenth century.
The composition follows the established conventions of the period, utilising chiaroscuro to model the figures against a wooded backdrop. Morghen employs a variety of line weights to differentiate between the soft flesh of the deities and the rougher textures of the surrounding foliage and the satyr's form. The inclusion of the coat of arms and the formal dedication to William Hamilton at the base of the print indicates its intended audience, likely collectors or patrons of the arts in Naples during the Grand Tour era.
As a reproductive print, this work provides insight into how classical imagery was disseminated across Europe. The attention to anatomical detail and the balanced arrangement of the figures reflect the aesthetic values of the time. The print remains a clear example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by Italian engravers who sought to translate the painterly qualities of the High Renaissance into the medium of printmaking. The work is presented here with its original cartouche and heraldic details, preserving the historical context of its production.
