A detailed seventeenth-century etching depicting the execution of a heretic, showcasing the precise line work and historical narrative style of the Dutch Golden Age.
This etching depicts the execution of a heretic in Mantes-la-Jolie, a subject rooted in the religious conflicts of the seventeenth century. The composition focuses on the central figure bound to a stake, surrounded by billowing smoke and flames. An executioner stands in the foreground, using a long pole to manage the fire, while a small dog remains near his feet. The background features the architectural silhouettes of a town square, rendered with the precise line work characteristic of Dutch printmaking from this period.
The artist, Hermannus Ribbius, employs a technique that emphasises the stark contrast between the dark, swirling smoke and the illuminated figures. The cross-hatching and varied line weights create a sense of depth and texture, particularly in the rendering of the flames and the clothing of the figures. This work belongs to a broader tradition of historical documentation and moralising imagery, often produced to record events of religious persecution or civil unrest. The scene is devoid of sentimentality, presenting the event with a directness that reflects the graphic nature of the subject matter.
Technically, the print demonstrates a mastery of the etching needle. The artist manages the density of the lines to suggest both the heat of the fire and the atmospheric conditions of the square. The inclusion of onlookers in the distance provides a sense of scale and context, grounding the event within a specific urban setting. As a historical document, the piece offers a window into the visual culture of the Dutch Golden Age, where printmakers frequently engaged with themes of martyrdom and public justice. The work remains a compelling example of how graphic arts were used to disseminate information and shape public perception of historical events during the early modern period.
