A detailed Renaissance engraving by Girolamo Mocetto depicting the Virgin Mary above a gathering of eight saints.
This engraving by Girolamo Mocetto depicts the Virgin Mary in a state of glorification, positioned above a group of eight saints. The composition is divided into two distinct registers. The upper portion features the Virgin, her hands clasped in prayer, surrounded by cherubim. Below her, a landscape includes a fortified castle and distant hills, providing a sense of spatial depth that contrasts with the more static arrangement of the figures below.
The lower register contains the eight saints, including John the Baptist, Anthony the Great, and Francis of Assisi. They are rendered with individualised features and distinct vestments, reflecting the artist's attention to detail in his printmaking practice. Mocetto, a Venetian artist active during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, was known for his work as both a painter and an engraver. His style shows the influence of the Bellini family and the broader Venetian school, particularly in the treatment of drapery and the atmospheric quality of the background.
The technique employed here demonstrates the linear precision characteristic of early Italian engraving. The hatching and cross-hatching define the forms of the figures and the folds of their garments, creating volume without the use of colour. The inclusion of specific saints suggests a commission or a devotional purpose, common for prints of this period. The work provides insight into the dissemination of religious iconography through the medium of print in Renaissance Italy. The figures are arranged in a semi-circle, their gazes directed upwards towards the Virgin, which creates a unified narrative focus. The architectural elements in the background serve to ground the scene, while the floating cherubim bridge the gap between the earthly and the divine realms.
