A formal garden scene, likely at Versailles, by Russian artist Alexandre Benois. This oil painting features trimmed hedges, classical statues, and loose brushwork.
Alexandre Benois (1870-1960) was a Russian artist, art critic, historian, and stage designer. He was a founding member of the Mir iskusstva (World of Art) movement, which sought to promote aestheticism and modern art in Russia. Benois is particularly known for his historical paintings and his work for the Ballets Russes. His memoirs offer insight into the artistic and intellectual life of his time. His family had French roots, and he maintained a lifelong connection to French culture. He emigrated from Russia after the Revolution, living in Paris. This painting depicts a formal garden, likely at Versailles, with a long path flanked by meticulously trimmed hedges and trees. A series of classical statues line the left side of the path, adding to the scene's sense of order and grandeur. The colour palette is dominated by greens and browns, with touches of grey in the sky. The brushwork is loose and impressionistic, capturing the light and atmosphere of the garden. The composition draws the eye along the path, creating a sense of depth and perspective.
