Alexandre Benois (1870-1960) was a Russian artist, art critic, historian, and stage designer. He was a founding member of the Mir iskusstva (World of Art) movement, which sought to promote aestheticism and modern art in Russia. Benois is particularly known for his historical paintings and his work for the Ballets Russes. His memoirs offer insight into the artistic and intellectual life of his time. His family had French roots, and he maintained a lifelong connection to French culture. He emigrated from Russia after the Revolution, living in Paris.
