The term kwab, or auricular, refers to the cartilage-like, organic forms that define the composition. These fluid, fleshy shapes appear to melt and fold into one another, creating a sense of malleability that contrasts with the rigid geometry of earlier Renaissance ornamentation.

The central oval space is framed by these undulating forms, which terminate in two distinct masks at the top and bottom. Lutma, a goldsmith by trade, applied his understanding of metalwork to the medium of printmaking. The shading techniques employed here mimic the way light plays across polished silver or bronze, giving the two-dimensional print a sculptural quality. The lines are precise, building volume through cross-hatching and varying densities of ink.

Such designs were often produced as pattern books for other craftsmen, including silversmiths, woodcarvers, and furniture makers. They provided a visual vocabulary for the creation of frames, cartouches, and decorative hardware.
