A detailed seventeenth-century etching depicting the ruins of the Circus of Maxentius on the Appian Way in Rome.
This etching captures the ruins of the Circus of Maxentius, historically misidentified as the Circus of Caracalla, located along the Appian Way in Rome. Published by Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi, the print reflects the seventeenth-century fascination with Roman antiquities and the documentation of the city's decaying architectural heritage. The composition presents a wide, panoramic view of the elongated arena, showing the surviving perimeter walls and the central spina.
In the foreground, small figures traverse the grassy expanse, providing a sense of scale against the massive masonry structures. The background features the rolling hills of the Roman countryside, rendered with fine, hatched lines that define the topography and distant ruins. The text inscribed below the image provides a contemporary description of the site, noting its dimensions and its proximity to the Church of San Sebastiano.
De' Rossi was a prominent publisher in Rome, known for his extensive collection of prints that catalogued the city's monuments. This work belongs to a broader tradition of vedute, or view paintings and prints, which served as essential visual records for scholars and travellers during the Grand Tour era. The etching technique allows for precise detail in the brickwork and the textures of the landscape, capturing the melancholic state of the ruins as they appeared in the mid-seventeenth century. The work functions as both a historical document and a piece of decorative art, reflecting the period's interest in classical archaeology and the preservation of ancient sites through print media.
