Description
A masterful mezzotint by Frank Short, interpreting J.M.W. Turner's dramatic vision of the Via Mala gorge in Switzerland.
This mezzotint by Sir Frank Short depicts the dramatic Via Mala gorge in Switzerland. Short produced this work as a direct interpretation of the original composition by J.M.W. Turner, which formed part of the Liber Studiorum project. The print demonstrates the technical precision Short applied to the medium of mezzotint, a process he helped revive during the late nineteenth century.
The image captures the sheer scale of the alpine environment. Towering, jagged rock faces dominate the composition, creating a sense of enclosure and verticality. A stone bridge spans the chasm, providing a human-made element that contrasts with the raw, geological power of the gorge. The light is handled with careful modulation, moving from the deep, velvety shadows of the ravine to the brighter, atmospheric effects near the upper reaches of the cliffs. This tonal range is characteristic of the mezzotint process, which relies on the gradual transition between light and dark rather than linear marks.
Frank Short was a central figure in the British printmaking revival. His work often involved translating the painterly qualities of earlier masters into the graphic medium. By choosing to replicate Turner's vision of the Via Mala, Short engaged with the tradition of the sublime, a concept that prioritised the awe-inspiring and sometimes terrifying aspects of nature. The print serves as a record of this dialogue between two artists separated by time but united by their interest in atmospheric conditions and dramatic topography. The monochromatic palette reinforces the focus on form, texture, and the interplay of shadow across the stone surfaces. It remains a fine example of the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Etching and Engraving School of the Royal College of Art, where Short served as a professor for many years.
