A still life by Horace Pippin depicting a domestic interior with flowers, chairs, and sculptures, viewed through a folk-art lens.
Horace Pippin (1888-1946) was an American self-taught artist known for his depictions of historical events, biblical scenes, and everyday life. Pippin began painting seriously after being wounded in World War I, which limited the use of his right arm. He developed a unique style characterised by flat perspectives, simplified forms, and a strong sense of narrative. His work often reflects his personal experiences and observations of the world around him. 'Victorian Parlor Still Life' presents a view into a domestic interior. The composition is anchored by a central table adorned with a vase of flowers. The flowers, rendered in bold colours, provide a focal point against the muted background. Flanking the table are two chairs, each with distinct designs, and two sculptures on pedestals. A window frames a wintery scene, offering a glimpse of bare tree branches against a pale sky. The painting's flat perspective and simplified forms contribute to its folk-art aesthetic.
