A lithograph by El Lissitzky connected to the Futurist opera *Victory over the Sun*, featuring a dynamic arrangement of geometric shapes and lines, rendered in a limited palette of black, white, grey, and pale pink.
This lithograph is part of a series created by El Lissitzky, connected to the Futurist opera *Victory over the Sun*. The opera, first performed in 1913, tells the story of a group of futurist strongmen who travel to a new world to destroy the sun, which they see as a symbol of the old order. Lissitzky reinterpreted the opera's themes and characters in a series of abstract, geometric compositions. The print features a dynamic arrangement of geometric shapes and lines, rendered in a limited palette of black, white, grey, and pale pink. The composition includes a figure constructed from geometric forms, with a square on its chest and a star on its head. The figure is set against a background of intersecting lines and shapes, creating a sense of movement and tension. The text in Russian and German adds another layer to the composition, referencing the opera's themes of revolution and the overthrow of the old order. The overall effect is one of radical abstraction and utopian vision, characteristic of the Russian avant-garde.
