A minimalist composition by Dutch artist Armando, featuring a grid of four black panels accented by industrial rivet motifs.
Armando, born Herman Dirk van Dodeweerd, was a Dutch artist whose practice often engaged with the weight of history and the physical presence of materials. In 'Vier maal zwart' (Four Times Black), the artist presents a grid-like structure composed of four distinct panels. The work is defined by its monochromatic application of black paint, which creates a sense of absolute density and absorption. The surface is punctuated by a series of rivets or circular indentations that trace the borders of the quadrants, suggesting an industrial or architectural origin.
This piece reflects the artist's interest in the concept of 'schuldig landschap' or guilty landscape, where the physical environment retains traces of past trauma. By utilising a stark, repetitive geometry, Armando removes the distraction of colour, forcing the viewer to confront the texture and the physical reality of the paint itself. The rivets act as a rhythmic, mechanical element that contrasts with the deep, matte void of the black fields. This tension between the industrial construction and the void-like quality of the surface is characteristic of his later period, where he moved away from more gestural marks toward a controlled, almost clinical examination of form.
The composition is strictly ordered, yet it possesses a heavy, imposing quality that commands attention. The repetition of the circular motifs provides a sense of scale, grounding the otherwise ethereal darkness of the panels. As a fine art print, this work maintains the stark contrast and the subtle variations in surface texture present in the original oil painting. It is a study in restraint, offering a meditative experience through its reduction of visual information to the most essential elements of light, shadow, and structure.
