A geometric study by Max Bill, exploring the mathematical division of a square into balanced, coloured segments.
Max Bill, a central figure in the development of Concrete Art, produced this work as an exploration of mathematical order and visual clarity. The title, translating to 'Quartering of a Square', describes the systematic division of the pictorial plane. Bill, who studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau, applied principles of logic and geometry to his artistic practice, rejecting subjective expression in favour of objective, measurable relationships between form and colour.
In this composition, the square is rotated to a diamond orientation, a common device in Bill's work to disrupt traditional horizontal and vertical axes. The surface is divided into distinct geometric segments, each filled with a specific, muted hue. The interaction of these shapes relies on the precision of their edges and the balance of their areas. By removing representational elements, Bill directs the viewer to observe the physical properties of the painting itself: the weight of the colours, the sharpness of the intersections, and the equilibrium of the overall structure.
This piece reflects the artist's belief that art should be a product of the human mind, constructed according to mathematical laws. The palette is restrained, avoiding high-chroma saturation to maintain the focus on the structural logic of the division. The absence of texture or brushwork reinforces the concept of the painting as a finished object, free from the traces of the artist's hand. It is a study in spatial organisation, where the division of the square creates a sense of order that is both rational and visually stable. The work remains a clear example of the mid-twentieth-century movement toward non-objective art, where the primary concern is the relationship between geometric elements within a defined space.
