View and Plan of Toledo is a singular work in the oeuvre of El Greco. Unlike his more conventional religious compositions, this painting functions as both a topographical record and a symbolic representation of the city he adopted as his home. The canvas presents a dual perspective: a panoramic view of Toledo, rendered with the artist's characteristic elongated forms and dramatic, turbulent skies, and a physical map of the city held by a young man in the foreground.

The composition is divided into distinct zones. To the left, a group of allegorical figures, often interpreted as personifications of the Tagus River, reclines in a rocky setting. In the centre, the city of Toledo rises upon its hill, depicted with a mixture of accuracy and expressive distortion. Above the city, a celestial vision of the Virgin Mary and saints appears, suggesting a divine protection over the urban space. To the right, a youth holds a large, blank scroll, which serves as a map of the city, complete with a dedication and a plan of the Hospital of Saint John the Baptist.

El Greco employs a palette dominated by cool greys, deep blues, and earthy ochres, punctuated by the stark white of the map and the ethereal light surrounding the celestial figures. The brushwork is fluid and rapid, typical of his late period, creating a sense of movement that permeates both the clouds and the architecture.
