Description
A classic woodblock print from Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, capturing the serene Tone River from the Kōnodai plateau.
This woodblock print is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige between 1856 and 1858. The composition depicts the Kōnodai plateau, a site of historical significance overlooking the Tone River. Hiroshige employs a vertical format to contrast the steep, verdant cliff in the foreground with the expansive, horizontal reach of the water below.
In the upper left, a group of figures stands atop the precipice, framed by the silhouettes of pine trees. Their presence provides a sense of scale against the vastness of the river. Several boats with white sails navigate the waterway, guiding the viewer's eye toward the distant horizon. A faint outline of Mount Fuji appears in the background, a recurring element in Hiroshige's work that anchors the scene within the geography of the region. The colour palette relies on subtle gradations of blue, known as bokashi, which transition from the deep indigo of the water to the pale sky above.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of the ukiyo-e tradition. The lines are clean and deliberate, defining the contours of the cliff and the delicate foliage of the trees. The use of negative space allows the composition to breathe, creating a sense of calm. This work captures a specific moment in the topography of Edo, documenting the relationship between the natural environment and the human activity along the riverbanks. It remains a representative example of Hiroshige's late career, where he focused on atmospheric effects and the interplay of light and distance. The print is a high-quality reproduction of the original woodblock, preserving the original colour balance and the texture of the paper grain.
