Paul Cézanne returned to the subject of Mont Sainte-Victoire repeatedly throughout his career. This specific iteration, produced during his final years, demonstrates his method of constructing form through colour patches. Rather than relying on traditional perspective or outlines, Cézanne builds the mountain and the surrounding Provençal valley using a series of overlapping, rhythmic brushstrokes. The palette is dominated by cool blues and greys in the sky and the mountain mass, which contrast with the warmer, earthy ochres and greens of the foreground vegetation.
Cézanne sought to achieve a sense of permanence in his work. He analysed the structure of the natural world, breaking down complex forms into simplified geometric components. The mountain acts as a stable, monumental presence against the shifting atmosphere of the sky.
