A detailed woodblock print by Hasegawa Sadamasu capturing the lively atmosphere and coastal views of Mount Tenpō in Osaka.
This woodblock print by Hasegawa Sadamasu depicts the bustling activity at Mount Tenpō in Osaka during the mid-nineteenth century. Mount Tenpō, an artificial hill created during the Tenpō era, became a popular destination for leisure and sightseeing among the residents of Osaka. The composition captures the social energy of the site, showing a dense crowd of visitors enjoying the coastal view, cherry blossoms, and the maritime traffic in the harbour.
Sadamasu, a prominent figure in the Kamigata school of printmaking, employs a clear, narrative style. The foreground is packed with figures in traditional attire, their varied postures and interactions providing a glimpse into the daily life of the period. The use of a large, vertical cartouche on the right side of the print identifies the location, a common convention in Japanese topographical prints of the time. The background features the gentle slopes of the hill and the expansive sea, where sailing vessels navigate the waters. The colour palette relies on soft greens, blues, and muted earth tones, typical of the woodblock printing techniques used in the Osaka region during this era. The print functions as both a souvenir and a record of a specific urban development, documenting the intersection of public recreation and the changing geography of the city. The artist's attention to the human element, rather than purely topographical accuracy, provides a social history of the site as a place of gathering and observation.
