Pierre Henri de Valenciennes was a significant figure in the development of plein air painting. During his extended residence in Italy, he produced numerous oil sketches directly from nature, capturing the specific light and atmospheric conditions of the Roman countryside. This work demonstrates his methodical approach to observation, prioritising the accurate rendering of light as it falls across the urban architecture and the surrounding vegetation.

The composition is structured with a clear horizontal emphasis, typical of his studies. The foreground remains relatively simple, allowing the eye to travel across the middle ground where the dome of the basilica rises above the dense foliage. Valenciennes utilised a restrained palette, focusing on the subtle shifts in tone between the sky and the built environment.
