A detailed 1777 etching by Jean-Jacques de Boissieu, capturing the rural architecture and river scenery of Saint-Romain-sur-Gier with precise line work.
Jean-Jacques de Boissieu was a French artist from Lyon, recognised for his technical mastery of etching. This work, dated 1777, depicts the rural surroundings of Saint-Romain-sur-Gier. The composition captures the quiet interaction between the river and the stone structures situated along its bank. De Boissieu employs a precise, controlled line to define the textures of the architecture, the foliage, and the water surface.
The etching demonstrates the artist's focus on observation. He balances the solid forms of the buildings against the softer, more organic shapes of the trees and the hillside. The inclusion of small figures on the path provides a sense of scale, grounding the scene in a specific, lived-in reality. De Boissieu often drew inspiration from the Dutch masters of the seventeenth century, particularly in his approach to light and shadow, yet he maintained a distinct clarity that is characteristic of his own output.
This print reflects the artist's preference for regional subjects. By documenting the specific topography of the Lyonnais region, he provides a record of the area as it appeared in the late eighteenth century. The work is executed with a high degree of technical skill, showing the artist's ability to create depth through varying densities of cross-hatching and line work. It remains a clear example of his contribution to the medium of etching during a period when the art form was undergoing a transition in style and subject matter.
