A classic Post-Impressionist study of the Provençal countryside by Paul Cézanne, featuring his signature structured brushwork and colour modulation.
Paul Cézanne produced this work during his mature period, focusing on the terrain surrounding his native Aix-en-Provence. The composition depicts the Domaine Saint-Joseph, a site he returned to on multiple occasions. Cézanne employs a systematic application of paint, using short, diagonal brushstrokes to construct the form of the hills and the architecture nestled within the foliage.
Rather than relying on traditional linear perspective, the artist organises the space through the modulation of colour. Cool blues and greens define the shadows and the receding hills, while warmer ochres and creams identify the structure of the house. This approach creates a sense of structural unity across the canvas. The trees in the foreground act as a frame, guiding the eye toward the central building, yet they remain integrated into the overall surface pattern of the work.
Cézanne avoids the atmospheric blurring common in earlier Impressionist works. Instead, he prioritises the solidity of the objects and the relationship between the various planes of the image. The sky is rendered with similar rhythmic strokes, ensuring that the entire surface maintains a consistent texture. This painting demonstrates his method of analysing nature through geometric simplification, a process that would later inform the development of Cubism. The work remains a clear example of his objective to treat nature by the cylinder, the sphere, and the cone, while maintaining a direct connection to the specific light and atmosphere of the Provençal countryside.
