Description

Paul Cézanne produced this work during his mature period, focusing on the terrain surrounding his native Aix-en-Provence. The composition depicts the Domaine Saint-Joseph, a site he returned to on multiple occasions. Cézanne employs a systematic application of paint, using short, diagonal brushstrokes to construct the form of the hills and the architecture nestled within the foliage.
Rather than relying on traditional linear perspective, the artist organises the space through the modulation of colour. Cool blues and greens define the shadows and the receding hills, while warmer ochres and creams identify the structure of the house.
