A detailed view of the Renaissance fresco cycle by Luca Signorelli within the Chapel of San Brizio, Orvieto Cathedral.
The Chapel of San Brizio, located within the Orvieto Cathedral, houses one of the most significant fresco cycles of the Italian Renaissance. Luca Signorelli began this commission in 1499, following the departure of Fra Angelico and Benozzo Gozzoli, who had completed the ceiling vaults. Signorelli expanded the programme to cover the walls with a narrative concerning the end of the world, the resurrection of the flesh, and the final judgement.
Signorelli demonstrates a preoccupation with the human form in motion. His figures possess a sculptural quality, defined by muscular tension and anatomical precision. The composition integrates the architectural geometry of the chapel with the painted scenes, creating a sense of continuity between the physical space and the depicted narrative. The palette remains grounded in earthy tones, ochres, and muted blues, which harmonise with the existing structure of the cathedral.
This view captures the transition between the vaulted ceiling and the wall surfaces. The upper registers feature celestial figures and prophets, while the lower sections depict the dramatic events of the apocalypse. Signorelli employs a rigorous approach to perspective, ensuring that the figures appear to occupy the same three-dimensional space as the viewer. The work reflects the artist's ability to manage large-scale narrative cycles while maintaining attention to individual characterisation and psychological depth. The influence of these frescoes on later artists, including Michelangelo, is well-documented in art-historical literature. This print offers a perspective on the spatial arrangement and the thematic cohesion of the chapel, allowing for an examination of the relationship between the architecture and the painted decoration.
