A cityscape by French Neo-Impressionist Maximilien Luce, 'View Of The Observatory District' depicts a panoramic view of Paris, dominated by the Paris Observatory, using small strokes of colour to create a luminous effect.
Maximilien Luce (1858-1941) was a French Neo-Impressionist artist known for his paintings, graphic art, and illustrations. He began his artistic training as a wood engraver, later studying painting at the Académie Suisse and in the studio of Isidore Pils. Luce became associated with the Neo-Impressionist movement in the mid-1880s, after meeting Camille Pissarro and other artists who were developing the pointillist technique. He exhibited with the Société des Artistes Indépendants and participated in the eighth and final Impressionist exhibition in 1886. His work often depicted urban scenes, industrial subjects, and landscapes, rendered with a divisionist approach. 'View Of The Observatory District' (1887) presents a panoramic vista of Paris, dominated by the imposing structure of the Paris Observatory. The scene is rendered with a characteristically Neo-Impressionist technique, using small, distinct strokes of colour to create a luminous effect. The rooftops of the city stretch out towards the horizon, punctuated by the domes of prominent buildings. The composition is divided into distinct layers, with the foreground featuring the roofs of buildings, the middle ground occupied by the Observatory and surrounding trees, and the background showing the distant cityscape under a cloudy sky. The colour palette is muted, with blues, greens, and browns dominating the scene, creating a sense of atmospheric perspective.
