A detailed lithograph by Jules Dupré depicting a serene river scene in Alençon, showcasing the atmospheric style of the Barbizon School.
This lithograph, titled Vue Prise à Alençon, captures a quiet moment along the river in the Orne department of France. Jules Dupré, a member of the Barbizon School, focused his practice on the observation of nature and the atmospheric conditions of the French countryside. His work often prioritised the interplay of light and shadow over precise topographical accuracy, a trait visible in the soft, tonal transitions across the sky and the water.
The composition is structured around the river, which draws the eye towards a stone bridge in the distance. To the left, a large, mature tree anchors the foreground, its foliage rendered with varied strokes that suggest movement. A small boat occupies the centre of the water, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the rural setting. The buildings on the right bank are partially obscured by vegetation, suggesting a harmonious integration of human architecture and the natural environment.
Dupré was instrumental in bringing the techniques of English painters, such as John Constable, to the French art scene. His approach to lithography allowed for a range of grey tones, which he used to create depth and mood. The print was originally published in the periodical L'Artiste, which helped disseminate the aesthetic values of the Barbizon painters to a wider audience. The work reflects the artist's interest in the transient qualities of the day, with clouds gathering above the horizon and reflections shimmering on the surface of the river. It is a study in quiet observation, capturing the character of the French provinces during the mid-nineteenth century.
