A woodblock print from the series 'Views of Famous Places in Japan Paired with Kyōka Poems' by Totoya Hokkei, depicting a river scene with poetry.
This woodblock print originates from the series 'Views of Famous Places in Japan Paired with Kyōka Poems' (Kyōka fusō meisho zue), a collaborative project involving the artist Totoya Hokkei. Hokkei was a prominent student of Katsushika Hokusai, and his work reflects the technical precision and stylistic sensibilities associated with the later Edo period. The print features a scene along the Yodo River, incorporating architectural elements such as a fortified structure alongside a water wheel. A boatman navigates the waterway, while a group of figures pulls a vessel from the riverbank, demonstrating the daily activities of the region.
The composition is balanced by the inclusion of kyōka, a form of comic or satirical waka poetry. These verses are integrated directly into the visual field, a common practice in surimono and illustrated books of the era. The text provides a literary layer to the visual representation of the site, connecting the physical geography of Japan with the cultural output of the period. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft earth tones and muted washes to define the river, the land, and the sky. The lines are fine and controlled, characteristic of the woodblock carving techniques employed by skilled artisans of the time.
This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of travel literature, poetry, and visual art in nineteenth-century Japan. It serves as a record of both the physical environment and the social customs of the time. The print is presented as a double-page spread, maintaining the original format of the illustrated book. Its aesthetic is defined by a sense of order and clarity, with each element placed to guide the viewer across the page. The work remains a representative example of the collaborative nature of Japanese print culture, where artists, poets, and carvers worked in concert to produce volumes for a literate and art-conscious public.
