The Tōkaidō road, connecting Edo and Kyoto, provided a well-trodden path for artists during the Edo period. Yoshishige reimagines the famous stations of this route as miniature landscapes contained within decorative ceramic vessels.
The composition presents a singular, craggy mountain formation, likely representing a specific station along the route, housed in a blue-glazed pot adorned with white chrysanthemum motifs. Two trees frame the central rock, their forms echoing the gnarled, weathered appearance of specimens found in nature.
