A precise nineteenth-century commercial etching by Isaac Weissenbruch, depicting a cigar box for the Amsterdam shop 'De Atlas'.
This etching by Isaac Weissenbruch serves as a commercial vignette for 'De Atlas', a cigar shop located on the Kalverstraat in Amsterdam. The work depicts an open cigar box, rendered with precise, clean lines that define the structure of the container and the contents within. The interior lid features the shop name and address, while the side of the box bears the text 'Flor Habana', a common designation for premium tobacco products of the period. The phrase 'Verbeterd Fabrikaat' (Improved Manufacture) appears on the front edge, reflecting the marketing language used by nineteenth-century merchants to attract customers.
Weissenbruch, a member of a notable family of Dutch artists, produced this work for commercial application. The composition is straightforward, focusing on the clarity of the product to ensure legibility in print. The use of hatching creates subtle shadows, providing a sense of volume to the box without unnecessary ornamentation. Such vignettes were common in the mid-nineteenth century, appearing on invoices, advertisements, and shop stationery to establish a professional identity for local businesses. The work offers a glimpse into the retail culture of Amsterdam during this era, documenting the specific branding and presentation of luxury goods like cigars. The simplicity of the design allows the viewer to focus on the typography and the functional nature of the object, which remains a clear example of period commercial graphic design.
