A stylised hilltop village by French artist Auguste Herbin, 'Villaggio di collina' uses simplified geometric forms and a restrained colour palette to create a Cubist cityscape.
Auguste Herbin (1882-1960) was a French painter known for his contributions to Cubism and later, abstract art. His early work showed Impressionist and Fauvist influences, but around 1910, he embraced Cubism, developing a personal style characterised by simplified forms and geometric structures. He was a founding member of the Abstraction-Création group in 1931, advocating for non-figurative art. His later work explored the use of colour and geometric shapes to convey emotions and ideas. 'Villaggio di collina' presents a stylised hilltop village. The composition is built from simplified geometric forms, with houses, trees, and the church rendered as angular shapes. The colour palette is restrained, featuring greens, browns, and muted blues, which create a sense of harmony. The painting's flat perspective and simplified forms are typical of Herbin's Cubist style, which sought to reduce objects to their essential geometric components.
