A 1929 oil painting by Francis Picabia, featuring his signature transparency technique with overlapping figures, chains, and butterfly motifs in yellow and blue.
Villica safe, painted in 1929, belongs to the period of Francis Picabia known for his transparency works. During this phase, the artist layered multiple images upon one another, creating a sense of depth that defies traditional perspective. The composition features overlapping figures, chains, and butterfly motifs, all rendered in a distinct yellow and blue palette. The figures appear to float within a dreamlike space, their forms merging with the surrounding environment through thin, linear contours.
Picabia, a central figure in the Dada movement, often rejected conventional artistic techniques. In this work, he employs a technique of superimposition that forces the viewer to navigate several visual planes simultaneously. The presence of chains and the ethereal, almost ghostly quality of the figures suggest a narrative rooted in the subconscious. The butterflies, a recurring motif in his later work, add a layer of fragility to the scene. The painting avoids a singular focus, instead offering a complex arrangement of shapes that interact across the surface of the canvas.
This piece reflects the artist's interest in the fluidity of perception. By stripping away the boundaries between foreground and background, Picabia creates a visual experience that is both disorienting and hypnotic. The work does not rely on traditional modelling or shading to define its subjects. Instead, it uses the interplay of light and dark tones to suggest volume. The result is a composition that feels suspended in time, capturing a moment of transition rather than a static event. It remains a clear example of how Picabia manipulated the medium of oil paint to explore themes of memory, identity, and the limitations of the human eye.
