This work is a classic example of the Italo-Byzantine style, produced in the early thirteenth century. Berlinghiero, a painter active in Lucca, follows the established iconographic tradition of the Hodegetria, or the Virgin who points the way. The composition focuses on the intimate connection between the Virgin and the Christ Child, who reaches towards her face. The figures are set against a flat, gilded background, which serves to remove them from a specific temporal or physical space, placing them instead in a realm of spiritual contemplation.

The painting demonstrates the characteristic linear refinement of the period. The Virgin wears a dark mantle, rendered with deep shadows and subtle highlights that suggest the form beneath the fabric. Her features are elongated, following the Byzantine aesthetic, with almond-shaped eyes and a slender nose. The Christ Child is depicted with a degree of naturalism that was beginning to emerge in Italian art, yet he retains the formalised posture typical of medieval devotional panels. Two small angels are positioned in the upper corners, their forms echoing the symmetry of the central figures.

Berlinghiero was a significant figure in the transition from the rigid Byzantine style to the more expressive forms that would later define the Italian Renaissance. His work reflects the influence of Eastern Orthodox iconography, which was prevalent in Italy at the time. The use of tempera on wood panel, combined with the application of gold leaf, creates a surface that catches light, intended for use in a dimly lit church or private chapel. This print captures the texture of the original panel, preserving the historical character of the paint and the subtle craquelure that has developed over centuries of preservation.
