Elisabetta Sirani, a prominent figure in the Baroque movement, defied the artistic conventions of 17th-century Bologna. Born in 1638, she was not merely a painter but an entrepreneur, managing her family's workshop and supporting them financially through her art. Her prodigious talent allowed her to produce an astonishing number of works in a short career, with some scholars estimating over 200 paintings, drawings, and prints. Sirani's paintings often featured strong female figures drawn from mythology, the Bible, and classical literature. 'Judith with the Head of Holofernes' and 'Portia Wounding Her Thigh' showcase her skill in portraying drama and emotion. Unlike many female artists of her time, who were often limited to portraiture or still life, Sirani tackled grand historical and religious subjects, demonstrating her ambition and intellectual depth. She was celebrated in her time, receiving commissions from noble families across Europe. Tragically, Elisabetta Sirani's life was cut short at the age of 27. Her sudden death fuelled rumours, and while her maid was accused of poisoning her, many believed she succumbed to the stresses of her demanding career. Despite her brief life, Sirani left an indelible mark on the art world, paving the way for future generations of female artists and leaving behind a legacy of powerful and emotive works.
