A devotional tempera painting by the Florentine master Neri di Bicci, depicting the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child and attendant angels.
Neri di Bicci was a prolific Florentine painter who operated a large, successful workshop during the mid-fifteenth century. This work displays the characteristic style of his studio, which focused on producing devotional images for both ecclesiastical and private domestic settings. The composition follows a traditional iconographic arrangement, featuring the Virgin Mary in a posture of prayer, gazing down at the Christ Child who is wrapped in swaddling clothes. Two angels support the infant, while two additional cherubic heads emerge from the upper corners of the frame.
The painting employs tempera on panel, a medium that allowed for the precise application of colour and the inclusion of fine details. The use of gold leaf for the haloes and decorative elements is typical of the period, providing a luminous quality that contrasts with the muted tones of the garments. The figures are rendered with a focus on clarity and symmetry, reflecting the conservative aesthetic preferences of the Florentine middle class during the Quattrocento. Neri di Bicci is particularly noted for his meticulous record-keeping in his 'Ricordanze', a diary that provides historians with a rare view into the daily operations, commissions, and material costs of a Renaissance artist's workshop.
In this piece, the artist balances the solemnity of the religious subject with a gentle, humanised portrayal of the figures. The soft modelling of the faces and the rhythmic arrangement of the drapery demonstrate the technical proficiency expected of a master painter of his time. The background, featuring a subtle pattern, serves to focus the viewer's attention on the central group. This print captures the texture of the original panel, preserving the delicate brushwork and the specific colour palette that defines the artist's output.
